3 Most Common Mistakes People Make When Flossing

Flossing is an essential part of a complete oral care routine. It helps remove plaque and food debris from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach. Regular flossing helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. But even though flossing is important, many people don't do it correctly. In fact, a recent study found that only about 40% of adults floss daily.

If you're one of the many people who struggle with flossing, you're not alone. But don't worry, we're here to help! In this article, we'll discuss the three most common mistakes people make when flossing, and how to avoid them.

Mistake #1: Not Flossing Daily

The most common mistake people make when flossing is simply not doing it often enough. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day, preferably before bed. This will help remove plaque and food debris that has built up throughout the day.

Mistake #2: Using the Wrong Technique

Another common mistake is using the wrong flossing technique. To floss correctly, follow these steps:

1~ Break off about 18 inches of floss.
2~ Wrap the ends of the floss around your middle fingers.
3~ Pinch the floss between your thumbs and index fingers, leaving about 1 inch of floss exposed.
4~ Gently slide the floss between your teeth, using a sawing motion.
5~ Once the floss is between your teeth, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth.
6~ Slide the floss up and down along the side of the tooth, making sure to go below the gum line.
7~ Repeat steps 4-6 for all of your teeth.

Mistake #3: Rushing Through It

Flossing should not be rushed. Take your time and be gentle. If you floss too quickly, you could irritate your gums or even cause them to bleed.

Making Flossing a Habit

Flossing can be a challenge, but it's important to make it a habit. Here are a few tips to help you floss regularly:

•  Keep floss readily available. Put it in your bathroom, your car, or your purse so you can floss whenever you have a few minutes.
•  Set a reminder. Use your phone or a calendar app to remind you to floss every day.
•  Reward yourself. Once you've flossed for a week or a month, reward yourself with something you enjoy.

By avoiding these common mistakes and making flossing a habit, you can improve your oral health and prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. And remember, if you have any questions about flossing, be sure to talk to your dentist.
