Should I Worry About Refined Sugar?

While allowing your child to indulge in a tasty treat every once in a while is acceptable, snacking on sweets can cause issues for their teeth now as well as in the future. Here are some reasons you need to be careful with sugar and dental health.

About Cavities and Gum Disease

Both dental caries and periodontal disease can have long-lasting impacts on the dental health of children. Tooth decay, as well as periodontal disease, can damage their teeth and gums from the time their baby teeth begin to erupt throughout the rest of their lives. Both infections are caused by mouth bacteria. The bacteria can erode tooth enamel and can cause gum inflammation, even when your child is very young. If they have problems with their teeth and gums as children, it is likely they will continue to have problems well into adulthood.

One of the most likely culprits for poor dental health in children is sugar. If your child eats too much refined sugar, they are more likely to have tooth decay and periodontal disease.

What Is Wrong With Sugar?

No matter what you eat or drink during the day, you are bound to encounter sugar. Fruit is full of natural sugars, which explains why fruit can be so sweet. You need to eat fruits and vegetables each day to make sure you are getting enough essential vitamins and minerals, such as phosphorous, magnesium, and vitamins A and C.

While fruits contain natural sugar, it is refined sugar you need to be most cautious about. While all sugar, both natural and refined, can cause issues for the teeth and gums, refined sugar appears in large quantities in bread, candy, pastries, cake, pie, and ice cream. Refined sugar is a sugar processed to take out natural fibers and vitamins. If there is one thing that mouth bacteria love, it is refined sugar. The more sugar your child eats, the more likely they are to have tooth decay and gum disease.
