Most adults do not get enough vitamins in their daily diets, so many adults take multivitamins as well as other supplements to bulk up the amount of vitamins they have in their bodies. If you are one of those people who have decided not to take a multivitamin, here are some ways that vitamin deficiencies can lead to issues with your teeth and gums.
Calcium and Vitamin D
Did you know that nearly all of the calcium in your body is held in your teeth and bones? If you do not get enough calcium, your teeth can begin to become loose and fall out. In fact, it is particularly important to get enough vitamin D and calcium so that your body does not get rid of your teeth in order to preserve your bone mass. If you eat a balanced diet, you should be able to get most of the needed nutrients through food. However, taking a multivitamin ensures that both your teeth and bones stay healthy and strong.
Phosphorous
Next to calcium and vitamin D, phosphorous is vital to your teeth. Phosphorous is a mineral that your body needs to keep your teeth strong by keeping your tooth enamel hard. If your tooth enamel remains hard, it is less likely that harmful bacteria in your mouth can cause cavities in your tooth enamel. Also, if you keep your tooth enamel strong, it is less likely your teeth will crack, break, or chip. Unlike vitamin D and calcium, phosphorous is not as easy to obtain with diet alone, so taking a multivitamin will help keep your teeth healthy.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is as crucial for your gums as calcium and vitamin D are for your teeth. It helps maintain good blood flow to your gums, which helps keep them healthy. Also, vitamin C is one of the best anti-inflammatories nature provides. Vitamin C can help prevent gum disease because it also works to prevent infection.
