What You Should Know About Dental Insurance

Posted on 2/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Image of insurance paperwork. Dental care is crucial to maintaining overall health, which is pivotal in preventing a range of dental issues that can have broader health implications. While conventional health plans may not comprehensively cover oral and dental care, dental insurance bridges the gap.

What Is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a specialized policy designed to cover dental care costs. Policyholders typically pay premiums to access coverage, individually or through employer-based plans. There are three common avenues to secure dental health policies: As part of a medical insurance plan, a stand-alone policy, or as riders attached to health insurance policies.

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Dental insurance is like any other insurance policy. Plan holders pay a premium, which can be deducted from their pay if it is company-sponsored. Policyholders are responsible for some costs before the insurance provider covers the rest.

Deductible

This is the amount the policyholder pays out of pocket before the insurance provider covers the cost. Higher deductibles usually result in lower premiums, with preventive procedures often exempt.

Copayment

Also known as a copay, the policyholder pays a flat fee for certain services. The insurance provider will cover the rest.

Coinsurance

After reaching the deductible, costs are shared between the policyholder and the insurer. Most plans follow a 100/80/50 payment structure for preventive, basic, and major services, respectively.

Annual Maximum

This represents the maximum amount the dental insurance covers within a year. Once reached, the policyholder is responsible for additional costs.

What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Dental insurance covers a range of services. These can be categorized into preventive, basic, and major services:

Preventive Dental Care

Includes regular oral exams, teeth cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatments, and sealants. Many plans cover 100 percent of preventive care costs.

Basic Dental Care

Encompasses office visits, extractions, fillings, periodontal treatment, and root canals. Insurance may cover 60 to 80 percent of these costs.

Major Dental Care

Involves crowns, bridges, dentures, inlays, and root canals. Insurance plans generally cover around 50 percent of the fees for major dental procedures.

Selecting an appropriate policy ensures financial peace of mind and access to essential dental care. Get dental insurance that works for you and your budget.
