Watching your baby go through the stages of teething is a milestone that can come with some challenges. Understanding when to expect those tiny teeth to appear can help you provide the right care and comfort. Here are the stages of teething and offer some helpful hints for each phase:
Stage 1 (0-6 Months)
During this stage, the babies have their teeth inside the gums. These teeth will gradually emerge over the next few years. While there might not be any visible teeth, the process has already begun beneath the surface.
It's a good idea to gently wipe your baby's gums with a clean, damp cloth after feeding. This practice can help maintain oral hygiene and get your baby used to the sensation.
Stage 2 (6 Months)
Around the 6-month mark, you'll likely see the first teeth appear. The upper and lower incisors are usually the first to erupt.
As those little teeth start emerging, consider using a soft infant toothbrush to gently clean them. You can find toothbrushes designed for infants with extra soft bristles. It's also a great time to introduce the dental care concept so your baby becomes familiar with the routine.
Stage 3 (10-14 Months)
Primary molars start erupting between 10 to 14 months. These are the wider teeth located at the back of the mouth.
To help soothe the discomfort accompanying teething, offer your baby safe toys or chilled teething rings. The coolness can provide relief to sore gums. Ensure that whatever you offer is free from small parts to prevent choking hazards.
Stage 4 (16-22 Months)
Between 16 to 22 months, the canine teeth begin to appear. These are the pointy teeth between the incisors and molars on the top and bottom.
Keep practicing good oral hygiene habits by gently brushing your baby's teeth with an infant toothbrush and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. At this stage, it's more about introducing the routine than achieving perfect brushing.
Stage 5 (25-33 Months)
Large molars make their entrance between 25 to 33 months. These are the wider teeth at the back of the mouth, completing the primary teeth.
