Am I At Risk of Developing Oral Cancer?

Posted on 11/21/2022 by Evan
Am I At Risk of Developing Oral Cancer? Cancer is horrifying but the good news is that early detection and subsequent treatment improve outcomes. Oral cancer often goes undiagnosed early on before the development of serious symptoms when patients fail to get screened. Fortunately, with the aid of a skilled oral surgeon, it can be detected and treatment is done before it progresses.

Risk Factors Associated with Oral Cancer

Genetics and specific behaviors may make one more susceptible to cancer development. Genetics cannot be modified, however, behaviors that pose a high risk for cancer can be controlled by avoiding or limiting them such as lifestyle and diet choices. Risk factors are different for everyone, including genetics and certain behaviors. Alcohol consumption and the use of tobacco have been proven to increase the odds of developing oral cancer.

Smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco are associated with the release of carcinogenic products and chemicals. The products are known to have a detrimental impact on the tissues and trigger oral cancer development. Research findings have demonstrated that about 80% of individuals diagnosed with oral cancer have a history of smoking.

Excessive alcohol intake entails taking alcohol over 21 times a week and this has been linked with the development of oral cancer. Alcohol not only causes dehydration in the gums and teeth's supporting structures but also diminishes bodies' ability to protect itself against infection and its ability to repair damaged tissue. Limiting or avoiding these habits significantly reduces the likelihood of getting oral cancer.

Chronic infection with Human Papilloma Virus has also been linked to oral cancer development. However, anyone regardless of reduced risk factors can still develop oral cancer.

Need for Oral Cancer Screening

Routine bi-annual screening for oral cancer is highly recommended to help in early detection and treatment. The presence of symptoms such as cysts, chronic facial pain, and abnormalities in tissue development warrant the need to get screened by a dentist.

Take any abnormalities regarding your dental health seriously and see a dentist for a thorough examination to rule out oral cancer. For routine screening and oral examinations contact us today to book an appointment with our skilled oral surgeon.
