So you’re ready to take the plunge and get your teeth professionally straightened—but the thought of traditional metal braces sends you all the way back to middle school (and not in a good way). Don’t stress! We’ve got a less invasive alternative you should consider: clear aligners.
What are they?
Simply put, clear aligners are transparent plastic orthodontic devices used to adjust your teeth. They’re personalized to fit your bite and will help move crowded or crooked teeth discreetly. They can also be used to correct overbites, underbites and other minor dental issues.
How do clear aligners work?
The process involves a series of custom-made, clear plastic trays that sit directly over your natural teeth to help shift them into position over time. Following an in-office consultation, we’ll start by taking a mold of your teeth which will be used to create a 3D model of your bite in our computer. We’ll use this model to create your first set of trays.
You’ll wear each set of clear aligner trays for two weeks. At your appointments, we’ll check on your teeth progression and provide you with your newest set of aligners. All of your bite changes will get logged in our computer, where we will update your 3D model and order the next set of trays. These regular check-ins will also help us provide you with an accurate timeline for completion. Treatment times vary depending on the state of your bite, but the average patient wears clear aligners for roughly one year.
If you want to achieve the absolute best results in the quickest amount of time, we recommend you wear your aligners for at least 20 hours per day. Of course you may remove them for eating, drinking and oral care, but—aside from that—constant wear is the key to achieving the dream smile you’ve always wanted!
Clear aligners vs. braces
What are the main differences between clear aligners and braces? The most obvious difference is that clear aligners are removable. This is one of the biggest perks because it allows you to eat and drink freely—without worrying about food getting stuck in them. In addition, the clear trays are nearly invisible and usually go unnoticed in day-to-day conversations. Since they are plastic, clear aligners are also gentler on cheeks and gums than traditional braces.
