What Is a Root Canal?

You may even get a severe headache. Even eating or drinking can become a difficult, painful chore. One of the best ways to fix a horrible toothache may be a root canal.

Why a Root Canal for My Tooth?

People often need a root canal because they have an infected tooth. Usually, an infected tooth starts out small. Most likely, you had a small cavity in one of your teeth. If you have a cavity, it means acids from bacteria have eaten away at the enamel of your tooth. When our dentist can catch a cavity early, usually from one of your regularly scheduled checkups, they can fix it quickly. However, if it has been a while since you went for a checkup, your cavity will continue to grow.

Once the cavity reaches the soft insides of your tooth, called the tooth pulp, your tiny cavity can become a serious infection, which can lead to tooth pain and unnecessary suffering. That is when a root canal may be the only thing that can save your tooth.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

The first step our dentist will take during a root canal is to make sure you feel no pain during the procedure. Once the area around your tooth is numb, a dentist can make an incision in the top of your tooth. That way, they can remove the inner pulp of your tooth and get rid of the infection. Your tooth pulp gets replaced with antibiotics and composite fillings to fight the infection. Usually, you will also need a crown to cover and protect the tooth.

The best part of the root canal is that it removes the source of your pain and suffering. After you regain feeling in your tooth, you may feel an ache for a day or so, but your tooth is on the way to healing.
