Treatment for Tooth Sensitivity

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Evan
Treatment for Tooth SensitivityTooth sensitivity happens when the pulp cavity is exposed to sensation, which is typically caused by cavities or gum disease. Tooth sensitivity shows up in the form of sharp pain, especially when consuming cold or hot foods and beverages. Your dentist can recommend several treatments for your tooth sensitivity depending on the severity and circumstance.

Fluoride Treatment

The dentist will recommend a fluoride prescription to apply to your teeth to strengthen the enamel and treat the sensitivity. Fluoride can naturally be found in water. It is also advisable to add fluoride toothpaste to your brushing routine.

Using a Desensitizing Toothpaste

Desensitizing toothpaste contains properties that block sensations from reaching the nerves of your teeth. This will gradually reduce tooth sensitivity.

Gum Graft

Tooth sensitivity can be caused because of receding gums. Your dentist can conduct a gum graft by taking gum tissue from elsewhere in your mouth and surgically adding it to the receded region, covering the exposed nerves.

Home Treatments

Several home treatments can be used to treat mild tooth sensitivity. One of them is using a saltwater rinse. This is done by adding a tablespoon of salt to a glass of warm water, swishing it in your mouth for thirty minutes, then spitting it out. This can be added to your brushing routine; therefore, twice daily.

Another remedy is a Hydrogen Peroxide rinse. The antiseptic and disinfectant qualities of hydrogen peroxide will heal your gums and alleviate inflammation. Therefore, adding two caps of Hydrogen Peroxide to warm water and rinsing your mouth with it will alleviate tooth sensitivity. Swishing the solution and then spitting it out twice a day is recommended.

Root Canal

When all these other procedures to eliminate tooth sensitivity fail, your dentist can recommend getting a root canal. This treatment involves cleaning out the cavity and removing any contaminated parts. The cleaned cavity is then filled and sealed in a painless procedure that will make your teeth whole and functional again.
