What are Implants?
Implants are artificial tooth replacements. They were developed more than 35 years ago because of a real need on the part of patients to secure loose-fitting dentures. Implants became almost an instant success for just this reason. Since 1967 the knowledge and engineering of dental implants has enabled both dentists and patients to expand their usefulness in areas of the mouth that tooth replacement once was not possible.

Dental ImplantsExactly do implants do?
Implants are metal (titanium) cylinders that are placed in the jawbone exactly where natural teeth used to be. They have very similar shapes as natural teeth and the body accepts them because the metal implant is very compatible with human tissues. As the implant heals (generally from 3 to 6 months) healthy bone grows around the implant to "lock" it in.

What applications do implants serve?
Many patients that have lost a single tooth can have one implant to replace that missing tooth when once a 3-unit bridge was necessary. Now perfectly healthy teeth need not be "shaved" down to accommodate tooth replacement. Denture wearers can have replacement teeth that no longer "slip" when they eat or talk. Failing natural tooth abutments can be replaced confidently, successfully, and often times less costly. Ask your dentist about some of the more elaborate uses of implants.

Can I have implants?
The answer is almost always "yes"! However, your dentist will determine this with an examination, x-rays, and a treatment plan that best suits your dental needs. As a rule though, if adequate bone is available you can likely have implants.

Summary
When deciding whether implants are for you, ask yourself a few questions. First, am I doing the right thing for me? Second, do I want the best health care for my specific problem? Third, do I deserve the best that medical technology can provide for me? If the answer to any of these is "yes", then you should pursue information regarding dental implants.
