Dental Bonding

If you have minor dental problems that you wish to address in an affordable manner you may want to consider dental bonding. Dental bonding uses tooth-colored resin and a high intensity curing light to help restore teeth as well as improve their appearance. It can be sculpted to fix minor to moderate dental problems including the following:

  • Filling cavities
  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improving the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Closing spaces between teeth
  • Making teeth look longer
  • Altering shape of teeth
  • Protecting exposed tooth roots

As you can see from the above dental bonding has numerous applications and may be the quick way for you to improve your oral health as well as appearance. The dentists at Masci & Hale will evaluate your dental health and let you know if dental bonding is right for you and get you on your way to an effective treatment plan.

Dental Bonding Benefits

Dental bonding is a very common procedure and is also one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry treatments available. Procedures that require dental bonding can generally be completed in one office visit negating the need for numerous trips to the dentist. In addition to the above, dental bonding requires very little preparation and most procedures that use dental bonding do not require any sort of anesthesia.

Dental Bonding Alternatives

In the event that you or your dentist feel that dental bonding is not right for you there are other options available to you depending on your personal needs. If you are considering bonding to enhance the appearance of your teeth you may want to consider dental veneers or a teeth whitening. If your teeth have suffered from significant damage dental bonding may not be appropriate and you may be advised to receive a dental crown.

The best way to determine what the limitations, if any, are for your teeth is to visit our office and have a consultation with one of our friendly Orange County dentists.

Dental Bridge in Walden, NY for Missing Teeth

Dental Bridge

Dental Bridge for Tooth Loss

There are many options for replacing missing teeth including dental implants, dentures, partials, and the dental bridge. A dental bridge is a good option for people who aren’t suffering from complete tooth loss and want a cheaper alternative to dental implants. A dental bridge can be installed without affecting the surrounding teeth although some types require crowns to be placed on the surrounding teeth to “bridge” the gap between the healthy teeth and missing tooth.

Besides being unattractive, have you considered why replacing missing teeth is so important? Missing teeth are associated with an aged appearance and can make you look years older than you really are. This is because the shape of your face can actually change due to gum loss that is directly correlated to tooth loss. Replacing a missing tooth will prevent you from looking older as well as help you to maintain your facial appearance.

In addition to looking older a missing tooth will create a gap in your smile that may cause the remaining teeth to shift. This drifting can eventually affect the way your jaw closes and create bite relationship problems. These types of problems can be the beginning of TMJ pain, thus causing problems with your jaw joint.

If the above two reasons aren’t enough you will also have to consider that the gap left in your teeth will become more susceptible to gum disease and the surrounding teeth to decay. Food that gets trapped in these spaces begins to develop into bacteria that cause these problems. This can result in the loss of more teeth as well as result in problems with your overall oral health as gum disease is being linked to cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other serious ailments.

The best thing you can do after tooth loss is replace a tooth as soon as possible. This will retain your oral health and prevent the above mentioned dental health issues. Learn more about dental bridges in Walden, NY by contacting us today.

Dental Crown Placement by Walden Cosmetic Dentist

A recent study suggested that patients often choose their dentists for factors such as cost and convenience over experience and specialization. Here’s why Walden and Hudson Valley dental patients should consider other factors such as the expertise of their dentist before getting a dental crown procedure done.

A dental crown is used to cover a damaged tooth, as an anchor for a dental bridge, and to restore a tooth after a root canal treatment. Dental crowns are more than just restorative procedures; they also add strength, durability, and stability to a tooth as well as enhance aesthetics. For these reasons it pays to select a dentist who is experienced at both restorative and cosmetic aspects of functional restorative dentistry.

At Masci & Hale Advanced Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry in Walden, NY dentists Peter Masci, Timothy Hale and Thomas Rafferty specialize in more than just general dentistry. In fact, they are amongst the highest trained dentists in the Hudson Valley area and even serve on numerous boards of prominent dental companies.

Their training will help you determine the best treatments for the restoration of your teeth as well as offer alternatives if necessary. Based on the color and texture of your natural teeth, our Walden dentists will match your porcelain crowns for the most natural look possible. The goal is to blend your restoration so that there is no visible difference between your crowns and natural teeth.

As dental crowns require the shaping of your damaged tooth to help cement the restoration into place, they should be a final option for your dental issues.

Zoom Teeth Whitening in Walden, NY

Zoom Whitening

Zoom Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure for a few reasons. Namely, it helps to improve the appearance of teeth which results in a more youthful, vibrant look for the recipient. Also, teeth whitening is a simple treatment taking only about an hour. To help our patients remedy the effects of tooth discoloration we offer Zoom Whitening as it has been clinically proven to produce effective results and brighten smiles easily.

Why Choose Our Walden Practice for Zoom Whitening?

If you have considered other teeth whitening treatments you will probably be shocked to know that the FDA and most dentists recommend that you receive a teeth whitening treatment by a professional. Over-the-counter products are not FDA-approved because they have not been found safe for consumers who operate the whitening chemicals. Done incorrectly, a whitening procedure could produce harmful effects on the gums and may not result in the uniform whitening of the teeth.

This is why we recommend that you use our professional experience to help you whiten your teeth in a safe and dedicated whitening environment. Not every dentist can offer Zoom Whitening, they must first undergo specialized training offered by Zoom to learn how to operate the patented whitening solution as well as the powerful whitening lamp.

Benefits of Zoom Over Other Whitening Treatments

In addition to offering the best results Zoom Whitening also offers the shortest length of treatment compared to take-home whitening kits, over-the-counter kits and toothpastes. If you are looking for the fastest possible way to improve your smile while benefiting from the best, safest and more effective results, look no farther than Zoom Whitening.

Walden, NY Dentists Explain Why Dental Implants Are the Smart Choice for Tooth Loss

Dental Implants

Dental Implants Smart Choice

Here at Masci & Hale Advanced Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry we generally recommend dental implants to our patients who have one or more missing teeth. Although we provide dentures and partials and often recommend them to our patients, we prefer implants because they are the best option as they provide long-term teeth replacements that are surgically placed in the jawbone. While both dental implants and dentures look and feel good after the adjustment period, only dental implants can provide the health benefits of modern dentistry. Learn more below.

Stopping Bone Resorption

Dental implants are recommended by dentists because they help stop bone loss in the jaw. When the jaw bone loses a tooth the tooth roots that once existed begin to resorb (dissolve). This can lead to a sagging facial appearance that makes people look older than they actually are, can cause trouble with eating and speaking, and lead to poor nutrition. In addition a missing tooth can affect the other teeth in the mouth as they shift into place to replace the missing area. This shifting can cause further problems including an increased risk for gum disease.

The dental implant helps to prevent all of these problems by integrating with your jaw bone and replacing the tooth roots. It is the only procedure that allows for your jaw bone to remain intact and is the best choice for patients who are considering replacing missing teeth.

Dental Implant Candidacy

Nearly all patients are candidates for dental implants with the exception of growing children. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth, numerous teeth, or all teeth. To determine if you are eligible to receive dental implants please contact our office for a thorough evaluation of your dental health.

Are You At Risk For Gum Disease?

periodontal disease

Are You At Risk for Gum Disease

According to some findings, over 75 percent of Americans have some form of gum disease, making it one of the most commonly occurring maladies in the country. Gum disease is attributed to being the leading cause of tooth loss and has even been linked to more serious health issues. Given the high percentages of people in which the disease affects and the seriousness of its development, dental patients should know what the risks are and if they have any signs indicating that they might have early stages of the disease.

Gum disease is caused by bacterial infection that builds up in the mouth around the teeth near the gums. If it is left to develop, it can damage the teeth’s connective tissue and bone and lead to tooth loss. The following are signs that you may have an early stage of gum disease:

  • Bloody gums during brushing
  • Sensitivity in the gums
  • Red or swollen gums (healthy gums are pink in color)
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth (more severe form of gum disease)

If you exhibit any of the above symptoms of gum disease you should see a dental health care provider immediately to check out your risk for gum disease. It can be prevented and controlled but left unattended can reap harm to your mouth and overall health. Early stages of gum disease can be treated with a thorough in-office dental cleaning and followed up with proper at-home care.

Causes of Gum Disease

Gum disease is caused by bacteria in plaque. If it is not removed effectively through regular brushing and flossing it can eventually harden and begin to adversely affect the gums. Once gum disease sets in, it inflames the gums and causes them to recede from the teeth which can lead to tooth loss. It is a very serious disease and must be stopped before it causes irreversible damage to your gums or teeth. If you are exhibiting any of the signs of gum disease contact Masci & Hale so that we may take measures to evaluate, diagnose, and treat you to prevent further harm.

Invisalign FAQ

Invisalign FAQs

Invisalign FAQ

Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments offered at our office and we are proud to enhance smiles with this great product. We have provided some Invisalign frequently asked questions below so that you can familiarize yourself with the product.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth without the use of wires and brackets. In effect it is a popular alternative to traditional braces and yields the same result. Invisalign are clear and are an invisible way to straighten teeth while maintaining a professional or mature appearance.

How does it work?

Invisalign employs a set of clear plastic aligners that straighten teeth incrementally. The process is simple to explain but the expertise of your dentist will play heavily into the success of the aligners. When you visit Masci & Hale we will evaluate your smile to determine the nature of your bite. There are several issues that can occur that cause one’s bite to become misaligned and the purpose of Invisalign is to work with your dentist’s treatment plan to correct those issues. Invisalign effectively improves your oral health and also gives you a straighter more aesthetic appearance.

Do they hurt?

Invisalign may cause some minor aches during the adjustment period but generally the pain is pretty mild. Most people don’t mind the adjustment period and our office works with Invisalign to create aligners that are as comfortable as possible.

What are the advantages over braces?

Invisalign aligners are clear and allow the user to maintain a professional image while improving their smile and correcting their teeth. Braces have unsightly metal wires and brackets that most mature teens and adults are uncomfortable wearing. Additionally these brackets can make your teeth more difficult to clean and can increase the accumulation of plaque which can lead to gum disease. Invisalign are removable allowing the user to easily clean their teeth and the aligners. Invisalign also offers an advantage in that the user is able to eat whatever foods they like where braces can restrict diet.

What are the disadvantages over braces?

The main disadvantage that Invisalign has over traditional braces is that it may not treat more serious dental problems. Invisalign works in most cases but under extreme cases of malocclusion it may not be your best choice. Your dentist will be able to make this determination.

Veneers Consultation and Procedure

Dental veneers

Veneers Procedure

Veneers improve the appearance of smiles but also offer functional benefits as well. They are custom-made for each patient and are used to transform smiles into things of beauty. If you are considering veneers you will have to go through an initial consultation with our office to evaluate your teeth and oral health and to determine what your goals are for your new smile.

The initial consultation between you and our dentists will be a discussion of the results that you wish to achieve. We will first have to evaluate your oral health and determine if you are eligible for veneers. If there are any limitations they will be discussed with you and your options will be explored and presented to you. The patient can expect to have x-rays and impressions of their mouth and teeth taken if they have not done so recently.

Upon the approval of your eligibility for veneers you will then be scheduled for an additional visit in which your teeth will be prepared for the addition of the veneers. Each tooth receiving a veneer will have a small amount of enamel removed equal to the amount of the veneer to be placed. The dentist will then take the custom-made veneers and temporarily place them on your teeth to examine them for fit and color. Once it is determined that the veneers are suitable for placement your teeth your teeth will be cleaned, polished and roughened to allow for a strong bond. The veneers are then attached to your teeth through a bonding process and final adjustments are made to ensure quality fit and a comfortable bite.

Although this is a very brief summary of the veneer procedure it sums up what you can expect from your dental visitation. The design of a new smile is a very detailed and intricate process which blends art and science to provide patients with beautiful smiles that are both aesthetically pleasing yet functional. This is a common procedure performed by our practice and we are proud to boast successful treatments with highly satisfied clients on an ordinary basis. Teeth Whitening- Why Our Teeth Become Discolored

Teeth whitening

Why our teeth discolor

Tooth discoloration is a part of aging and happens to nearly everyone at some time or another. Luckily there are methods that you can take to remedy the effects of yellowing or discoloration of your teeth including in-office whitening treatments and take-home treatments. Understanding why our teeth become discolored is important as there may be a variety of different reasons that this happens and therefore preventative measures that may be undertaken.

Our teeth contain a porcelain-like surface that is designed to protect our teeth from the effects of chewing, gnashing, trauma and acid attacks that are caused by sugar. This protective layer, called enamel, starts out bright white like that of children’s teeth. When this layer begins to break down discoloration can occur. As a result of the everyday wear and tear we place on our teeth the enamel begins to hold stains within its pores and becomes more transparent. The transparency of our teeth allows for the yellow color of dentin, the tooth’s core material, to appear. The more time that elapses naturally causes our teeth to accumulate more stains and causes our teeth to appear more dull and lackluster.

In addition to the natural causes of tooth discoloration there are also external culprits. These are mostly attributed to food and diet but may also be related to smoking or medicine use. As many know dark drinks such as coffee, teas and red wines can stain teeth. Did you know that fruit juices, soda and even beer can also discolor teeth? In addition to these dark drinks colorful foods are also responsible for tooth stains. Things such as cherries, blueberries, soy sauce and other heavily pigmented foods can also stain teeth.

In addition to diet medicine can significantly alter the color of teeth. Over-the-counter medication and antibiotics have been shown to dull teeth. Similarly the bacteria fighting antibiotic minocycline has been shown to yellow teeth and cause a permanent bluish-gray stain. Bad oral hygiene habits are also a culprit as allowing bacteria and stain-producing substances to accumulate on teeth will allow for the buildup of yellowing on your teeth.

Masci & Hale provides teeth whitening solutions and can help you decide if your diet, medicine, or other external factor may be the reason for your discolored teeth. To learn more contact us today.
